ContentsAppearanceEdit Shanks is a relatively tall man (just under two meters), durable, tan-complexioned, and in the prime of his mid-adulthood. Among the Four Emperors past and present he stands out as the smallest, most normal-sized by far, the others being different degrees of inhumanly proportioned. Real to his epithet, Shanks has noticeably red hair: normally portrayed throughout media as deep-crimsonish. Deserving of note is that, distinctively amongst all characters yet seen, even ones with equivalent hair tone, Shanks' hair is the sole one filled with grayscale in the black-and-white manga (rather of inked black or left white). His first-seen hairstyle was a straight, middle-parted one kept loosely down to nape length, with much shorter (at eye level), curtained bangs in the front.  In later appearances (at 10 years older), he is revealed with somewhat longer hair, wavier and more slicked back than prior to except for some few strands he lets fall down the sides of his face, pressed further sideward than stated prior bangs.
On his face lives a secondary trademark: a triple set of vertically parallel, linear scars that pass at an angle over his left (untouched) eye, revealed to have actually been provided to him by Blackbeard some unidentified time prior to the start of the series. Furthermore, Shanks' left arm is missing from below the deltoid, a result of him conserving Luffy from a Sea King when Luffy was a child.
As did his hair, Shanks' face modifications as the manga's art design advances: initially, it appeared more youthful, a soft jawline tapering down to a little, pointy chin. Its functions were likewise milder than later depictions and, save for his little nose, likewise bigger, most so his plain-black eyes, topped by thin brows.  Later looks reveal him more significantly countenanced, the square of his jaw, the sharper, narrower set of eyes, and the chiseled, more prominently bridged nose lending him a manlier appearance. Clothes-wise, Shanks used to wear a certain straw hat obtained from Gol D. Roger (his previous captain) that was associated with his image until he Click here passed it on to Luffy. Otherwise, his outfit constantly consists of a sweeping long, sleeveless black cape with a high collar (in the anime bearing a lighter, gray inside), and under it a basic, white t-shirt half-buttoned up, exposing the middle of his chest and upper abs. Furthermore, Shanks is always seen wearing pants cut listed below the knee, gathered halfway up the shin. Initially (Chapter 1) the set was a slightly loose, plain-brown one with golden buttons down the outer leg sides, and with a red sash around his waist to keep his t-shirt tucked within. Later on, he is seen using a various, slightly baggier set of pants with a green-yellow, indiscernible floral pattern (now exposing plenty leg hair), and his shirt is excluded of his sash, which is now revealed holding his saber at his ideal side. Finally, his footwear includes easy brown sandals, their soles gray-studded. After the timeskip, he is at some point seen using various pants yet again, light-colored with a rose pattern.
